Laser hair removal is process of using a laser across the skin that heats up a hair follicle so hot that it destroys its ability to stimulate hair to grow. The hair must be treated a number of times in order to get the follicle when it is in the active growth phase. There a several different lasers that the nurse will choose from based on your skin and hair color to achieve the best and safest results for you. It is best to be well shaved when you come in for a laser hair removal appointment. The hair that is present on top of the skin can get in the way of the laser “seeing” the follicle.

WHO SHOULD GET IT?

Anyone can get laser hair removal. We prefer patients be over the age of 14. If you are tan you do increase risk of burns from the laser.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT?

We offer numbing cream, and it is best applied at home before you come in for your appointment as it takes about 45 minutes to work well on the body. Not everyone needs or wants numbing cream, but it does help! A gel is applied to the skin of the area being treated and the laser fires pulses of light into across each section. When you are done there may be little bumps at the hair follicle, this is normal. The area can be pink and feel hot for a few hours.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?

Laser hair removal needs a minimum of 8 treatments for 80% of the hair follicles to be treated. However different people depending on skin color, hair color, and genetics, and even some medical conditions can need upwards of 12 treatments. They are typically spaced out six to twelve weeks apart depending on how much hair you have growing and what body part is being treated.

BEEN THERE DONE THAT!

I have been playing beach volleyball since middle school and having to shave every day to be in a bikini is time consuming and would cause me to have in grown hairs too! After having laser hair removal, I am always smooth! I don’t even have to think about it anymore. I did ten sessions over about a year and a half. And now 6 years later I only shave maybe four to six times a year for random little stragglers that show up eventually. It was the best decision ever! My Mom bought my first package when I was in high school and then I did touch ups when I came home from college. Thanks Mom!
